Valentine M. Villa (Social Work), director of the Applied Gerontology Institute, is the principal editor and one of the primary authors of a report for the Purposeful Aging Los Angeles (PALA) initiative, entitled Age-Friendly Action Plan for the Los Angeles Region 2018-2021, Aug. 7, 2018. PALA seeks to prepare the Los Angeles region for a rapidly aging population through an innovative, sustained initiative that unites public and private leadership, resources, and strategies. The action plan was presented to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles City Council. Villa also served on the PALA Action Plan Advisory Group for the past two years.

Walter Zelman (Public Health) is the co-author of an article, “California’s Efforts To Cover The Uninsured: Successes, Building Blocks, And Challenges,” in the journal Health Affairs, Sept. 1, 2018. Health Affairs is the leading journal of health policy thought and research. This special edition is devoted to an examination of “Health and Health Care in California.” He answered questions pertaining to the paper during a panel discussion at the Health Affairs’ Briefing in Santa Monica, CA, Sept. 17, 2018.
Melina Abdullah
Melina Abdullah (Pan-African Studies), chair, was honored for her achievements as a scholar and activist during California State University, Northridge’s 13th Biennial Phenomenal Woman Awards on Nov. 4, 2018. She was also recognized as an original organizer of Black Lives Matter and for being instrumental in replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day in Los Angeles while she was on the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission.
Emily Allen
Emily Allen (College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology), dean, was a finalist for the Enterprise Executive of the Year during the Los Angeles Business Journal Women’s Council and Awards event, held at the JW Marriott Los Angeles on June 22, 2018. She also secured a $525,000 grant from the Weingart Foundation to accelerate the achievement of students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The three-year grant will allow Cal State LA to establish the Acceleration Initiative, which will prepare students from groups who are underrepresented to succeed in STEM.

Yong Ba (Chemistry and Biochemistry) and Arman Pazouki (Mechanical Engineering) secured a $271,589 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation Program for their project titled “Acquisition of a Rheometer for Research and Research Training at Cal State LA.”
Choi Chatterjee
Choi Chatterjee (History) was one of the first two winners of the Ab Imperio Award, recognizing the best study of 2017 in the new imperial history and history of diversity in Northern Eurasia up to the late 20th century. She was selected for her award-winning article, “Imperial Subjects in the Soviet Union: Rabindranath Tagore, M. N. Roy, and Re-Thinking Freedom and Authoritarianism,” that was published in the Journal of Contemporary History, no. 4, Oct. 2017.

SCCUR is an organization of Southern California faculty, administrators and interested members of the community who share the common goal of improving education for college and university students through hands-on experiences of undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity.

Ester E. Hernandez (Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies) was named a first place winner of the Best Nonfiction Multi-Author for a book she co-edited, entitled U.S. Central Americans: Reconstructing Memories, Struggles, and Communities of Resistance (University of Arizona Press). She was recognized at the 2018 International Book Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles, CA, Sept. 8, 2018.
Silvia Heubach
Silvia Heubach (Mathematics) was named a recipient of the prestigious Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award for her innovative teaching practices that have increased student success in mathematics. Heubach was one of only 26 faculty members in the California State University system to receive the award, which recognizes faculty leaders who have implemented innovative practices that significantly improve student success. She was recognized at a reception in conjunction with the CSU’s Graduation Initiative 2025 Symposium in San Diego, CA, on Oct. 17-18, 2018.

Barry Hibbs and Godina Ying (Geosciences and Environment) won first prize in the outstanding paper category at the 9th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology in Houston, TX, June 25-29, 2018. Their award-winning paper was titled “Modeling and Assessing Uncertainty Factors in Salt Balances and in Ground Water Basins.”
Timothy Lim
Timothy Lim (Political Science) is part of a team of seven researchers who recently won the “Global Laboratory Program for Korean Studies” grant, totaling more than $1.3 million over a five-year period. The grant is supported by the Ministry of Education in South Korea (administered by the Academy of Korean Studies), and is designed to broaden the international horizon of Korean Studies by creating world-class research results. The project is titled “Local Agency and National Responses to Globalization: The South Korean Case in Comparative, Transnational, and Diasporic Perspective.”
Pamela Scott-Johnson
Pamela Scott-Johnson (College of Natural and Social Sciences), dean, secured a nearly $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to increase data accessibility and promote civic engagement among students and underserved communities in Los Angeles. The grant will establish a partnership between Cal State LA, the city of Los Angeles, Community Partners and the Social Equity Engagement geo-Data Scholars (SEEDS) to increase access and use of the city’s big data collection. The grant’s co-principal investigators are René Vellanoweth (Anthropology), Hengchun Ye (Geosciences and Environment) and Michael Willard (Liberal Studies).
